The ACLU-DC is an affiliate office of the American Civil Liberties Union, a national nonprofit organization devoted to the protection of civil liberties and civil rights through litigation, legislation, and public education. The ACLU-DC works primarily on issues that directly impact people who live in, work in, and visit the District of Columbia, and also on challenges to certain federal government policies and practices where they fall within the jurisdiction of the D.C. federal courts.

Job Description

Under the direction and supervision of the Managing Organizer, the Campaign Organizer will help design and execute sustained organizing campaigns to build civic engagement among D.C. residents – including directly impacted communities, community leaders, organizational allies, and ACLU members and supporters – with a particular focus on winning policies on the local level that reflect the ACLU-DC’s priorities. The Campaign Organizer will also work closely with the organization’s Policy, Communications, Legal, and Development teams, as well as coalition partners and community members. This is a permanent, full-time, salaried position. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Under the guidance of the Managing Organizer and in collaboration with policy staff, design and implement strategic campaigns to engage D.C. community members in direct constituent advocacy around key legislative priorities. 

  • Develop and implement different organizing approaches to achieve ACLU-DC policy objectives, including by constructing campaign plans that outline clear tactics, timelines, and metrics to achieve goals. 

  • Engage in the recruitment and development of campaign volunteers, leaders, and community partners. 

  • Develop guidance and trainings to effectively engage community members in organizing tactics, including in strategic targeting of decision-makers, submitting testimonies, setting up meetings with decision-makers, and using advocacy toolkits to email/call/text targets of campaigns. 

  • Organize public events such as rallies, town hall meetings, and panel discussions to mobilize impacted communities (including Black, Indigenous, Latinx, LGBTQIA+, Incarcerated, Formerly Incarcerated, and unhoused community members, among others), ACLU-DC members, and the public at large around organizational policy priorities.  

  • Participate in and facilitate on-the-ground meetings, planning, and campaign events.  

  • Maintain campaign calendar for the policy department. 

  • Work with advocacy technology tools, including implementing the best use of digital outreach tools including text messaging & phone-banking software, to increase engagement.  

  • Track campaign progress, produce reports and highlights and adjust plans as necessary. 

  • Engage in speaking opportunities to promote the ACLU-DC’s campaigns. 

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience in issue-based campaign work and/or electoral work. 

  • Experience designing campaign strategies and tactics and executing campaign plans. 

  • Working knowledge of advocacy campaigns, including legislative advocacy, coalition building, and community outreach. 

  • Creative, self-starting, willingness to learn, detail-oriented, and ability to adjust strategy to frequently changing demands. 

  • A demonstrated ability to work independently, follow through, and meet deadlines without significant direct supervision. 

  • Experience with campaign evaluation, supervision, and metrics-driven planning and assessment. 

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. 

  • A personal approach that values the individual and respects differences of race, ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity/expression, religion, ability, and socio-economic circumstances .

  • A commitment to advancing the ACLU-DC’s values, mission, and programs. 

  • Experience and ease with facilitating meetings and conducting trainings. 

  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, including an ability to work collaboratively, share responsibility and credit, and navigate and resolve conflict in a manner that values and respects relationships with colleagues inside and outside the ACLU. 

  • Willingness and ability to work irregular hours, including nights and weekends, and to travel within the District and occasionally outside of the District. 

  • Understanding of the need to be flexible but also the need to clearly articulate boundaries and calls for support within the organization and in coalition spaces. 

  • Demonstrated ability to develop allies and navigate internal political dynamics among partner groups and to work collaboratively with constituencies and policy-makers from a range of backgrounds and ideological positions. 

  • Proficiency with computers: Windows, Microsoft Office, and internet research in particular. 

  • Familiarity with campaign planning and management technology and software, including but not limited to tools like NGP VAN, EveryAction, etc. 

  • A baseline understanding of how local DC government functions is a plus.

Additional Information

Compensation:

The salary range for this position is $62,000 - 85,000 depending on experience and qualifications. Generous benefits include medical and disability insurance, 40l(k) and vacation, holiday and sick leave. This is a permanent, full-time position.
